The Metadata Working Group is pleased to release a revised draft of the Software Metadata Recommended Format (SMRF) Guide: SMRF version 1.1.0.
This revision represents an updated approach to SMRF’s adaptable framework, which is used to describe a range of software types and support discovery, access, and reuse in cultural heritage contexts. Building on its foundation, the revised SMRF includes the following key updates:
- An updated layout for an easier scanning and reading experience
- A Case Studies section that provides contextual metadata examples for specific software items
- Expanded Usage Notes with descriptions that include the way SMRF elements could support five defined Use Case Categories: Execution and Emulation, Discoverability, Preservation, Administrative, and Citation
The Metadata Working Group (MWG) hopes that the SMRF Guide will provide helpful guidance for stakeholders to better understand and describe their software collections within their specific context. In future iterations of SMRF, we hope to incorporate more feedback based on user experience, as well as specific use cases to demonstrate software description in practice. If you are using the SMRF Guide in your work (or otherwise!), we would love to hear about your experience using the guide, and any thoughts, questions, or other feedback you might have. Please be in touch via this Google Form and the MWG will follow up accordingly.
To our community members who have provided support and feedback for any version of SMRF: thank you! We look forward to the continued use and adaptation of the SMRF Guide.
