Scope:

The Metadata Standards and Policies working group is responsible for developing, promoting and advocating for common metadata frameworks and related metadata standards, vocabularies, and ontologies that support software preservation and access.  This working group will collect and analyze existing metadata standards, develop approaches for establishing a common metadata framework, suggest crosswalking strategies, and promote community awareness of complementary standards.

Action Plan:

Develop Software Metadata Recommended Format (SMRF) guide:

  • February 2020
    • Goal: Create a template for describing metadata fields.
      • Use existing case studies to create a template to aid in description of software metadata fields
  • March – April 2020
    • Goal: Descriptions of Required Fields.
      • We will work through describing the Required  software metadata fields and stress test our description template.
  • May 2020
    • Goal: Review feedback on Required fields
      • Update Required fields based on feedback.
  • June – September  2020
    • Goal: Descriptions of Recommended Fields.
      • We will work through describing the Recommended software metadata fields based on our description template.
  • October 2020
    • Goal: Share Recommended fields with SPN Community and request feedback
      • Request feedback from the SPN community on the updated required fields and newly created recommended fields.
  • November 2020 – February 2021
    • Goal: Descriptions of Optional Fields.
      • We will work through describing the Optional software metadata fields based on our description template.
    • Goal: Review feedback from SPN community
      • Update Recommended fields based on feedback.
    • Goal: Review of final product
      • Share the final guide for feedback with the rest of the SPN community.
